Reuters news agency reported that Poland’s Climate Minister Anna Moskwa wrote on Twitter on May 23 that: Poland has decided to terminate the intergovernmental agreement with Russia on the pipeline. gas Yamal.
Mr. Piotr Naimsky, Poland’s minister in charge of energy security, said: “After 30 years, it can be said that the relationship in the industry. gas industry between Poland and Russia is gone”.
Specifically, the Polish government passed a resolution to terminate the 1993 contract for the supply of Russian gas to Poland on May 13. However, the new official announcement was announced on May 23.
Along with Bulgaria and Finland, Poland has not accepted the new ruble payment mechanism announced by President Vladimir Putin at the end of March 2022.
Moskwa said the contract cancellation was a natural progression after Russia stopped supplying gas to Poland last month. Poland accuses Russia of a breach of contract.
The section of the Yamal pipeline linking Russia with Western Europe via Poland is owned by a joint venture between Russia’s Gazprom and Polish gas company PGNiG, operating under the control of the state gas transmission company Gaz- System of Poland. Previously, it was used to pump natural gas from Russia.
After being stopped from supplying gas by Russia, Poland has been using the reverse supply from Germany through this pipeline.
Ms. Moskwa asserted that intergovernmental agreements with Russia violate European law and will no longer apply. The Yamal pipeline is operating under European law.
At the end of March 2022, Russia asked “unfriendly countries” – those participating in sanctions and freezing Russia’s foreign currency reserves – to pay for energy contracts in rubles. Poland refused to respond to this request.
