Since 2022, the Southeast Asian Championship (AFF Cup) is attached to a new sponsor. The official name of this tournament is the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup. This is information announced during the sponsor launching ceremony of the tournament, organized by the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) on the morning of May 23 in Hanoi.
“As the world begins to reopen after the pandemic, we are delighted to be the main sponsor of the Southeast Asian Championship. We look forward to building a better future together with AFF. Mitsubishi Electric hopes to bring excitement and joy to many fans through this relationship.” Mr. Kunihiko Seki, Chief Representative of the Asia Pacific region of Mitsubishi, gave a speech.
AFF President Khiev Sameth said: “Entering the 14th season of the AFF Cup, we will have to continue to innovate and improve to overcome future challenges. This landmark partnership heralds a new era of the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup and I am extremely optimistic that we can take the tournament to the next level and most importantly, together raise the bar. football in the region”.
The AFF Cup 2022 is scheduled to take place in December with the participation of 10 teams in Southeast Asia, divided into 2 groups. AFF plans to bring the tournament back to the same format as in 2018, without the host country hosting the group stage, but each team can play 2 home matches and 2 away matches. The semi-finals and finals will apply the first and second leg format.
LIVE AFF Cup 2020 (postponed until the end of 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic), the format of the tournament has been adjusted to suit the situation. The number of matches remains the same, but the entire tournament takes place in Singapore in a closed bubble environment.
