The Japanese are crazy about a backpack that looks exactly like a real cat, priced at more than 1,000 USD
Crafted by Miho Katsumi, a housewife currently residing in Fukui Prefecture, the hand-stitched backpacks feature a cat with pink paws, large glittering eyes, and a fluffy tail. Some cat breeds successfully “clone” by Katsumi include the Persian, Munchkin and British Shorthair cats. The bags are usually made of faux fur that Katsumi dyes herself.
To make such backpacks is not an easy thing. Katsumi revealed that it took her a week to design and 1-3 months to craft. A complete “cat backpack” can consist of up to 80 different pieces. “It may take longer to achieve desired results” Katsumi added.
On April 15, Katsumi posted 4 photos on Twitter of a cat backpack “posing” outdoors. “The weather was nice today so I was able to shoot outdoors,” Katsumi wrote.
To date, the post has been shared more than 11,000 times. Many of them said that the backpack Katsumi created made them mistakenly believe it was a real cat. “Does anyone at first think this is a real cat like me?”Twitter user @emlynx commented.
Meanwhile, there are also many people expressing their desire to own one. But, unfortunately they will have to wait. Katsumi said she received a lot of orders last year, so she won’t be taking any more orders until further notice.
“I’m very happy to receive compliments from many people. We are currently trying to fulfill orders from last year. Thank you for your understanding!” Katsumi wrote on Twitter on April 17.
To date, Katsumi has sold 70 of her works. Each cat backpack is not cheap: 140,000 Japanese yen ($1,074).
Cats are cult animals in Japan. In Chinese folklore, cats bring good luck and have protective powers.
