The Quartet meets for the summit in Tokyo

This is considered one of the most important summits on the region’s foreign policy this year.

The main topics will be discussed at Quad Group Summit including the actualization Indo-Pacific Strategy freedom and openness, security and regional issues, the conflict in Ukraine, the Korean issue, the COVID-19 epidemic, cybersecurity and climate change.

It is expected that the group will consider pledging further support to developing countries in the areas of health worker training and public awareness activities on the importance of vaccination, and strengthen cooperation to develop a secure 5G telecommunications network.

In addition, one of the most awaited results in this meeting was the US launch of the Indo-Pacific Economic Cooperation Framework initiative. This is an economic commitment between the US and its partners and is seen as an alternative to the US withdrawal from the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Earlier, on May 22, the President’s Office of South Korea said that the country advocates developing a separate diplomatic and security strategy for the Indo-Pacific region that is expected to be published. in the coming months. The new strategy is said to include plans to “coexist” or “cooperate” with the Quartet (a framework of security dialogue that includes the US, Japan, Australia and India).

The decision was made after South Korea announced its participation in the newly proposed US Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

South Korea’s new policy will be a formal change from the previous administration’s Southern Policy, which focused on strengthening South Korea’s economic ties with Southeast Asia.
