Mr. Meeks made the statement at a news conference in Chisinau, where a delegation of US lawmakers held talks with top Moldovan officials.
“We need to talk to Moldova. We have to make sure that everyone is on the same page,” Meeks said when asked about the possibility of US weapons being sent to the region.
“I think there needs to be a dialogue, a conversation between the two sides,” he added.
“America will stand with Moldova,” Meeks stressed, adding that solidarity and cooperation are the most important things.
On May 20, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss revealed that London was also in talks with its allies to equip Moldova with “NATO standard equipment”. She argued that Moldova could be the target of a special campaign by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Moldova has a population of 2.6 million and is located between Ukraine and Romania.
Amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, there have been numerous explosions and provocations in the breakaway Transnistria region of Moldova. Transnistria is a narrow land between the Dniester River and the Moldova-Ukraine border, with a population of more than 500,000.
At the end of April 2022, Alexey Arestovich, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, suggested: “We can assist Moldova in the Transnistria issue”.
However, the Moldova side rejected the proposal, emphasizing that “the settlement of the Transnistrian problem can only be achieved through political means and on the basis of a peaceful resolution”.
