According to News Week, Zelensky gave the estimate when asked by reporters at a press conference on May 22 about a petition to revoke the ban on men from leaving the country. The petition has now attracted 25,000 signatures.
“I don’t know who this petition should be sent to. Maybe me. Or maybe it should be sent to the parents who have lost their son – the people who have protected this building or that building, the city. this or that city with their lives,” Zelensky said of the petition to revoke the ban on men from leaving the country.
“And you should know, most of them gave their lives to protect cities where they weren’t born. Today, between 50 and 100 soldiers can die in the fiercest battlefield, in East (Donbass) every day. They are defending our state and our independence, which is what everyone in the world is praising,” the Ukrainian leader added.
Zelensky’s statement comes as Ukraine rejects a ceasefire or any territorial concessions to Russia despite Moscow’s forces increasing attacks on the Donbass.
“The conflict must end with Ukraine fully restoring its territorial integrity and sovereignty,” Ukraine’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said in a Twitter post on May 22.
Another Zelensky adviser claimed that concessions would backfire on Ukraine as Russia would strike even harder.
“The war will not stop (after Ukraine gives in.) It will only pause for a while. They will start a new offensive, even more bloody and of a larger scale,” Mykhailo said. Podolyak, the top negotiator and adviser to President Zelensky emphasized.
Recent calls for an immediate ceasefire have come from US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi amid stalled peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Both Russia and Ukraine blame each other for this. The most recent round of direct negotiations between the two countries took place at the end of March in Istanbul, Turkey.
