US considers deploying special forces to protect embassy in Ukraine

President Biden has yet to receive the proposal. However, if he approves, the troops will only be deployed to protect the security of the US Embassy in Ukraineis now within range of Russia’s missiles, the US official said.

Currently, the White House is trying to find a way to balance the two factors. On the one hand, the State Department is concerned that having a strong level of security at the embassy in Kiev could provoke the Kremlin. On the other hand, the United States also needs to prevent possible attacks on its diplomats, as well as have enough forces to evacuate personnel if fighting breaks out in Kiev again.

In the immediate future, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will ensure the security of the newly reopened Embassy in Kiev by a security team of the Diplomatic Security Service.

In addition to the task force, US officials are also considering reinstating a security team drawn from the marines, which normally provide security at other embassies around the world.

To date, no formal proposals have been sent to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley or President Joe Biden.

In a statement, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said: “We are in close communication with colleagues at the State Department regarding potential security requirements as they resume operations at Ambassador shop in Kiev. No decision has yet been made and no specific proposal has been debated at senior levels of the department regarding the return of members of the US military to Ukraine for protection or any other purpose. other”./.
