Speaking at Georgetown University on May 21 when receiving an honorary doctorate, Secretary of State Blinken compared herself to singer Taylor Swift – an 11-time Grammy Award winner and recently received an honorary doctorate at the University of California. New York University (NYU).
“NYU selected Taylor Swift to be the keynote speaker at the award ceremony. Now, I want to start my speech by bringing up a difficult subject. But the staff won’t allow me to bring my guitar. I came here to sing for the President of Russia Putin the song ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’,” said Mr Blinken, making the audience laugh. “They said it was non-diplomatic, and may be offensive”.
Secretary of State Blinken’s comments came the same day as US President Joe Biden signed a $40 billion economic and military aid package for Ukraine, and after it emerged that the US was planning to maintain military force in Europe at 100,000 troops in the near future.
Also on May 21, Moscow announced a list of 963 US citizens permanently banned from entering Russia, including US President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken.
