Western Digital launches the world’s largest capacity hard drive, but not everyone can afford it

Recently, Western Digital (WD) has launched a series of storage products for users and businesses, including the world’s largest capacity HDD. The most prominent is the Ultrastar DC HC670 hard drive model, reaching 26TB.

The Ultrastar DC HC670 26TB drive uses magnetic recording (or SMR) technology to increase the amount of data that each platter inside the hard drive can hold. Inside WD’s new hard drive model includes 10 disks, each of which can hold 2.6TB of data. Previously, SMR technology was used by WD on its WD Red Pro hard drive line.

Besides, WD also launched a version with a lower capacity of 22TB, using traditional CMR technology. Both of these HDDs incorporate OptiNAND technology, introduced last year. OptiNAND adds NAND flash memory to the hard disk to act as a cache for improved performance especially when writing large blocks of data. OptiNAND also protects the write cache by securely writing data to disk, even in the event of an emergency power off.

However, with the Ultrastar DC HC670 being a product line aimed at data centers, ordinary consumers will not be able to own these “huge” capacity hard drives right away.
