Bali has a headache because tourists are naked, causing trouble again

The island’s economy is based on tourism, however those who do not respect the local culture and traditions are not welcome.

Since opening travel internationally in March, the Indonesian resort island saw a series of incidents of foreign tourists behaving badly, according to SCMP.

Just last month, a Canadian citizen and a Russian influencer were deported for being nude in public; a foreign tourist complains about hawkers on the beach; An Estonian beauty pageant contestant caused controversy when she accused the police of taking bribes.

The explosion of negative incidents underscores how tourism has become a double-edged sword for Bali, which has a majority Hindu population and is dependent on the sector.

Bali needs tourists, but if they break local norms and rules, we need to stop things from going too far. If they’re still stubborn, we should banish them outright”, shared Niluh Djelantik, entrepreneur and social activist.

Complain

Last month, a white woman posted a video complaining about the tourist mecca Kuta Beach. She called it “the worst place” and said she was harassed by street vendors while walking on the beach.

After that, the government Bali arrested about 50 beggars and homeless in the area, causing mixed opinions.

Some referred to the woman as “karen” (a term for white women who relied on authority to make excessive demands), while others agreed with her.

Not only forcing purchases, street vendors sometimes push and touch visitors. Don’t be indifferent, that’s the problem we have to face.”said Nanda Yudha (Indonesian).

However, Kelli Swazey, a cultural anthropologist based in Bali, was less sympathetic to the anonymous tourist’s complaint.

It is infuriating that the most vulnerable are punished when some white women complain about their vacation. I really hope this ‘karen’ leaves the island”, she said.

Nengah Trisnasih, who has been selling bracelets in Seminyak for 15 years, denies allegations that she or other peddlers pressure tourists to buy.

Many tourists in Bali are very kind. If they don’t want to buy, we’re fine“.

The 40-year-old said she struggled for the past two years as her daily income dropped from 100,000 rupiah ($7) to “almost nothing” during the epidemic.

However, I still go to the beach, hoping for tourists to love and buy things. I’m so scared of losing my fishing rod again”, she said.

Ana (50 years old), Nengah’s friend, shared: “We were all very orderly, no one ever complained. I hope everything will be fine as tourists are coming back“.

“Garbage Tourists”

Tourists to Bali are welcome but those who intentionally get naked in public are not.

Niluh Djelantik, a social activist from Bali, expressed anger at the recent deportations of tourists. It’s a Canadian man filming a nude video of dancing on Mount Batur or a Russian influencer going topless for a photo with a 700-year-old tree in the temple grounds.

The island doesn’t need such ‘trash tourists’. Everyone is welcome to come here to have a good time and enjoy the holiday. But if they don’t respect us, deportation is what awaits them”, she expressed.

After nearly two years of travel restrictions, Bali lifted the quarantine for vaccinated travelers and resumed the visa-on-arrival process.

Last month, the island’s airport welcomed more than 114,000 foreigners, up from 34,000 in March and a far cry from the meager 45 international visitors for the whole of 2021. This month, Bali received an average of about 6,000. foreign tourists come and go every day.

However, the return of tourism has also brought concerns about congestion, soaring prices, urbanization as well as guest misconduct.

Tourism is the lifeblood of Bali as nearly a quarter of the island’s 4.32 million people depend on it, and accounts for about two-thirds of the economy.

In 2019, about 6.2 million international visitors visited the island. Their absence in recent years is clearly felt. Bali’s economy shrinks by more than 9% in 2020 and is mostly unchanged last year, recording only 0.07% growth.

Indonesia’s central bank forecasts the island’s economy to grow by 6% in 2022 if tourism fully recovers.

In an effort to attract tourists back, Bali governor Wayan Koster called on the government to recognize Covid-19 as an endemic disease on the island, with cases stabilizing “at 10-20/day” and the rate of Covid-19 being stable. positive rate “always less than 2%”.

A stable situation continues despite our no-quarantine policy and issuing visas on arrival to international travelers from 60 countries“The Jakarta Post quoted him as saying.
