Closing ceremony of the 31st SEA Games

The closing ceremony, which took place on the evening of May 23 in Hanoi, closed the 17-day competition of athletes from 11 Southeast Asian countries.

Held at the Hanoi Indoor Athletics Palace, the closing ceremony was attended by about 3,000 people, including guests, representatives of sports delegations, volunteers, referees, spectators… The ceremony begins with a medley of songs about Hanoi – the city hosting the 31st SEA Games – with colorful images, typical of the Vietnamese capital. After the flag-raising ceremony of the host country, the participating sports delegations were introduced in turn, along with their achievements. At the end of the congress, Vietnam led the team with 205 gold medals, followed by Thailand with 92 gold medals and Indonesia with 69 gold medals. The saola – the mascots of the 31st SEA Games – hold a board introducing 40 sports to be contested. After that, there was a parade of referees and volunteers – who contributed significantly to the success of the congress.

In addition to art performances and parades, the closing ceremony also includes a full ceremony. In the closing ceremony, there was also honoring four typical athletes at the 31st SEA Games. Vietnam had two athletes, Nguyen Thi Oanh (three gold medals in athletics) and Nguyen Huy Hoang (five gold medals in swimming). The other two are Thai track and field athlete Joshua Robert Atkinson and Singaporean swimmer Jing Wen Quah.

Representing Vietnam, Minister Nguyen Van Hung handed over the flag of the Southeast Asian Sports Federation to Cambodian Tourism Minister Thong Khon. The host country of the 32nd SEA Games next year sends greetings with four art performances, including typical Khmer Apsara dances. Responding to Cambodian dances and songs, 100 folk singers of Quan Ho Bac Ninh performed the tunes Invite betel, Gia you and People who live in, don’t come back.
