Cryptocurrencies warned as worthless
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB) believes that cryptocurrencies are not worth a penny.
“My assessment is that it has no value. It is based on nothing. There is no underlying asset that serves as an anchor for safety,” Lagarde said of cryptocurrencies during a call. Interview with Dutch television on May 22.
Lagarde also called on global policymakers to come up with rules to protect inexperienced investors when placing large bets on digital assets.
“I’m concerned for those who believe it’s a reward, who don’t understand the risk, who will lose everything and are terribly disappointed in it. That’s why I believe it needs to be adjusted. tweaked,” Lagarde said.
This is not the first time the former head of the International Monetary Fund has expressed skepticism about cryptocurrencies. In the past, she has also repeatedly raised concerns about the environmental impact of digital currencies, as well as their potential use in money laundering and sanctions evasion.
Her assessments come at a time when the crypto market is coming under closer scrutiny, as regulators have begun to take control of their actions following the collapse of TerraUSD (UST).
