Learning History through the closing ceremony

Without the usual closing ceremonies, students from Lomonosov Middle School and High School participated in the “Echo of Dien Bien Phu” program to end the school year.

On the afternoon of May 24, the yard of Lomonosov Middle School and High School (Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi) was crowded with students even though the heavy rain had just stopped since the morning. All eyes turned to the stage to watch the program “Echo of Dien Bien Phu” – an interdisciplinary project of History – Geography – English – STEM – Music – Fine Arts performed by teachers and students.

Instead of speeches or awards ceremony, 120 students participated in recreating part of the Dien Bien Phu campaign more than 68 years ago.

At the beginning of the program, a group of students danced – solo flute the song “Northwest love song”. In the music, the two children introduced the land of Dien Bien. The music moves continuously in the narration summarizing the 56 days and nights of the history of the Dien Bien Phu campaign. Many scenes are recreated such as the French army parachuting, building blockhouses; Vietnamese soldiers broke rocks to pave the way and transport food. Some historical figures are mentioned such as General Vo Nguyen Giap, hero To Vinh Dien, Be Van Dan, Phan Dinh Giot.

All to recreate “Fifty-six days and nights of digging mountains, sleeping in a cellar, pouring rain, squeezed rice. Blood mixed with young mud, unshakable liver, unworn lice!” to create the Dien Bien Phu victory “splendid in five continents, shaking the earth”.

As one of the students who performed live, Nguyen Ha My, 8th grade, said she had three memorable weeks participating in the rehearsal for the project. I used to learn about the Dien Bien Phu campaign in lectures, but My insists that this is a gentle way to help me remember deeper knowledge.

“There are details that are quite difficult to remember if only memorized from textbooks. But when participating in the program, seeing images that reproduce those details every day, I will never forget,” My shared.

In addition to the knowledge of History and Geography, My learned many more skills such as working in groups, making friends, sharing with people around, and understanding more deeply about the spirit of solidarity and overcoming difficulties while practicing. training.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung, Vice Principal of Lomonosov Middle School and High School, said that this is not the first year the school organizes an interdisciplinary festival to help students have a new approach to knowledge. However, this is the first time the school has turned the closing ceremony into such a festival.

To prepare for the program, 120 students from all grades (except 9 and 12) practiced for about three weeks. The students and the teacher wrote the script and cast the actors. In addition, the children also prepared their own props and stage decorations.

“To create the bunkers, the children discussed with the teacher, intending to buy rice husks and put them in sacks, but the cost is too great. After that, they thought of implementing a small plan, collecting waste paper and putting it in. sacks to replace. This shows that every preparation, no matter how small, is also a lesson for the children,” said Ms. Nhung.

Regarding knowledge, with this project, Ms. Nhung believes that students can receive or review knowledge of many subjects at the same time in a natural and fun way. Learning through projects and experiential activities is especially useful for History – a subject many children are afraid of. According to Ms. Nhung, by integrating knowledge teaching into activities such as visiting historical places, museums, and inviting historical figures to the school to share, students are more interested in the subject.

In today’s event “Echo of Dien Bien Phu”, the school invited Colonel Dang Duc Song, hero of the people’s armed forces, to share memorable moments on the old battlefield. His story made many children cry, expressing gratitude, pride and love for the country.

In addition to this project, the testing and assessment process at school was also innovated by asking students to write a summary after each activity instead of the usual paper test. “Students love History more after each such activity,” Ms. Nhung shared.

This is clearly shown in the survey of 9th graders conducted by the school in April to serve the building of a complex of 10th grade electives under the new general education curriculum. Nearly 50% of students choose to study History in high school, higher than Chemistry or Biology.

Creative activities, diversifying teaching work like in Lomonosov are gradually being applied by many schools, especially the private sector, in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This is also the way many teachers and experts give when talking about teaching and learning innovation History.

Pham An Tien Khoa, an 8th grader who just transferred to Lomonosov School, admits that he loves History more through activities like today. “Instead of listening to speeches, awarding prizes and then watching some cultural performances like the closing ceremony of previous years, I find this activity more useful, not burdensome but very interesting”, Khoa hopes to experience. many similar programs, to easily acquire knowledge of the subjects.
