New York declares state of emergency due to shortage of milk powder
New York Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency to prevent profiteering during the powdered milk crisis.
The state of emergency will allow the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to prevent the price inflation of milk powder, according to a statement from the mayor’s office on May 22.
“This executive order will help New York crack down on any retailers that are trying to profit from the powdered milk crisis by raising the price of this essential item,” Adams said. “The nationwide milk shortage has caused ‘unimaginable’ pain and anxiety to families across the city, forcing us to act urgently.”
City residents who suspect they have purchased inflated milk powder can file complaints on the official New York website.

Mayor Adams said more than 40% of retailers in the tri-state area (which includes parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut) no longer have formula. CNN surveyed major retailers in three New York City boroughs but couldn’t find any milk cartons on the shelves of two major supermarkets in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. An unnamed supermarket employee revealed some of the milk was kept “in the back office”.
Families across the United States are struggling because of a shortage of formula milk, in the context of a global supply chain breakdown due to a shortage of formula milk. Covid-19 and many shipments of infant formula were recalled due to bacterial contamination. According to a Datasembly survey of more than 11,000 retailers, the out-of-stock rate of baby formula in the US was up to 43% at the beginning of the month.
The White House last week announced the opening of the campaign “Do not transport powdered milk“, arguing that bypassing the regular air route would speed up the import and distribution of infant formula and provide emergency assistance while factories continue to ramp up production.
