North Korea claims to have Covid-19 under control

The state news agency KCNA on May 24 said that Covid-19 had a steady downward trend, the number of patients with symptoms below 200,000 for the third day in a row.

“A few days after activating the emergency epidemic prevention and control system to the maximum extent, the nationwide morbidity and mortality rate decreased significantly, the number of recovered people increased, the situation stabilized, the pandemic was contained. and effective control,” KCNA said, highlighting these are the successes in North Korea’s fight against the Covid-19 outbreak.

North Korea is expanding production of essential drugs, but it is not clear what specific drugs these are. The country has not yet confirmed the total number of people who tested positive for nCoV. Health authorities only report the number of people with fever symptoms. This makes it difficult to gauge the scale of the Covid-19 wave.

North Korean officials are distributing food and medicine across the country, and deploying military medical forces to distribute and conduct tests. More than a million health workers, including medical school students and faculty, have been mobilized to contain and completely eliminate the source of the spread.

KCNA reported that at least 134,000 people showed “symptoms of fever” on May 24. The total number of fever cases in this country is 2.95 million, of which 68 have died. As soon as the authorities recorded the first infection on May 12, leader Kim Jong Un immediately ordered a blockade of cities. KCNA called it a “grave situation”. Authorities have raised the epidemic suppression measure to the maximum level of emergency.

The outbreak in North Korea could answer a pressing question about the true severity of Omicron circulating around the world, experts say. Previously, scientists did not know whether the mutation itself did not leave symptoms as severe as the original version in Wuhan, or whether the vaccine was highly effective and reduced the impact in general.
