Tourists plunge their car into the river because they follow Google Maps

While modern navigation apps have vastly improved over the last decade, they’re still not so good that you can trust them 100%.

In other words, while these apps generally do their job well, you shouldn’t rely entirely on them.

A family of tourists driving across India from Munnar to Alappuzha had a lesson of their lives when their Toyota plunged headfirst into a small river.

According to local media, the incident happened because the driver was following Google Maps instructions. The driver trusted the app so blindly that when it steered the car straight and the small river was the only thing ahead, the man behind the wheel continued to steer the car into the water.

Fortunately, this area is inhabited and the water is not too deep. All occupants got out safely after locals came to help, but the Toyota Fortuner needed a truck to pull it out of the river.

Usually, people blame the navigation app when encountering such problems, but in reality, it is the person behind the wheel who decides.

This is exactly why you shouldn’t trust navigation apps blindly, especially when driving in areas you’ve never been to.

If a route suggested by Google Maps for you to follow doesn’t seem right, it’s better to go back to the main road, even though it will take longer.

No one was injured in this new incident and locals have also installed chains to ensure that no other vehicle plunges into the river in the future.
