China expands trade by rail

In order to overcome the congestion of goods at seaports due to the prevention of the COVID-19 epidemic, as well as the increasing sea freight rates, China has strongly shifted to transport import and export goods by rail with trading partners, including ASEAN. In April, the volume of goods transported by rail increased by more than 10%.

A train carrying more than 60 containers of mechanical equipment, electronic components, and auto parts from Chongqing City to Yunnan Province, China, and by high-speed train to Mandalay, Myanmar. The new international route connecting China with an ASEAN country is 2,000 km longer, transporting goods in 15 days compared to the traditional 35-day route, saving 20% ​​of the cost.

From the seaport of Myanmar, the export goods of Chongqing and neighboring provinces located deep in the interior of China will go to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.

Through the railway, in April, China exported more than 132,000 tons of goods to Laos and tended to increase sharply. Agricultural products from Laos are also strongly exported to China. Vietnamese agricultural products will have more countries competing in the market of billions of people.

From the Kunming (China) – Vientiane (Laos) high-speed railway, more than 1,000 km long, invested more than 6 billion USD, with more than two-thirds of capital coming from China, this country aims to continue construction extends to Thailand, Malaysia and to Singapore – part of a strategy to build an interconnected infrastructure network across Southeast Asia.

The promotion of investment in the construction of extending China’s railway lines to ASEAN countries contributes to increasing the turnover of goods exchange between China’s remote regions and the landlocked countries of ASEAN. It also helps connect China with the RCEP Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership countries.
