From recording to real communication in English speaking practice

An effective way to practice speaking English is to record a speech and then listen and correct it yourself, but if you just stop there, you will not be able to communicate in reality.

Ms. Moon Nguyen, a Master of Applied Linguistics, an expert in teaching English-American pronunciation, shared about how to practice English for communication:

Learners in Vietnam often have little opportunity to practice speaking English through actual communication with foreigners, so one of the effective forms of practice is to record a talk by topic, and listen to it yourself. To fix.

However, many friends practice speaking and recording very confidently and fluently, but every time they meet a foreigner, they get “frozen”? So how effective is the self-recording and listening? And to confidently talk to any foreigner, what more do you need?

Learners should know the basic knowledge of English pronunciation combined with listening practice.

First, when speaking and recording, you speak to yourself. When communicating, you have to listen to what others say, not just talk nonsense. Thus, in addition to speaking skills, you need to improve listening comprehension skills. Communication is a combination of both listening and speaking, and listening plays a very important role.

Second, in communication, you must not only listen, but also react to what you hear. For example, when a partner says they just got a good paying job, you can’t just stay “inert” like a rock. You have to say something, for example “I’m glad to hear that”, “Good for you” or “Congratulations”. Similarly, when they present a point of view, you must listen and ask “follow-up” questions. Communication is a two-way interaction, you can’t just talk alone without caring what others say. Reacting to what your partner has to say is an important skill and will be perfected during communication.

Thus, even if you practice good communication skills by recording, you still need to practice “listening” (it is best to learn how to listen properly to know how to practice listening effectively) and “react” to what you hear. listen.

Once you have heard and reacted well, the effect of self-recording and listening back will be very evident. You will find ideas flowing freely and you will speak fluently, not humming like before.

In short, to communicate confidently, practice listening hard. To practice communicative response, communicate as much as possible with anyone in English, even Vietnamese. Do not think that you have to communicate with the West to be good. Communicating with Vietnamese people in English also helps you a lot in forming English thinking habits and practicing how to react to what you hear.
