Hairdressers may increase cancer risk

Certain chemicals in hair products may be endocrine disrupting, potentially carcinogenic, according to some studies.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there is conflicting research on how chemicals in hair dyes are linked to cancer risk. However, some recent studies have documented this association.

A study published in the International Journal of Cancer in 2019 found that some of the more than 5,000 chemicals in hair products can cause tumors in mice. Some can also change the DNA of cells and cause endocrine disorders, containing formaldehyde is a carcinogen.

This study found no increased risk for most cancers other than those listed above.

The US National Toxicology Program (NTP) has confirmed that certain chemicals used in hair dyes can cause cancer in humans. According to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), professional hairdressers who are exposed to chemicals on a regular basis are more likely to develop cancer than those who occasionally use hair straighteners.
