1. Place and time of organization

Initially, the AFC Football Federation awarded the right to host the 2022 AFC U23 Championship to China, but this country asked to withdraw due to the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

On February 26, 2021, the Uzbekistan Football Association (UFA) applied to host the tournament and was approved by the AFC. As planned, the 2022 AFC U23 Championship will take place from June 1 to 19 at 4 stadiums hosting 4 groups: Bunyodkor Stadium, Pakhtakor Stadium, Lokomotiv Stadium and Markaziy Stadium.

2. Competition format

The 16 teams that reached the finals were drawn into four groups of four teams. The draw took place at Bunyodkor Stadium on February 17. U23 Vietnam is in Group C with U23 Thailand, U23 Korea and U23 Malaysia.

Teams compete in a round robin, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals.

Ranking criteria for the group stage:

Teams are ranked by points (3 points for 1 win, 1 point for 1 draw, 0 points for 1 loss), and if the teams are equal on points after 3 innings, the following criteria will be counted. in turn are:

Scores in head-to-head matches between teams are equal on points;

Goal difference in head-to-head matches between equal teams;

Number of goals in head-to-head matches between equal teams;

If more than two teams are equal on points and after applying the above criteria remain equal, a subgroup of teams remains even, all of the above head-to-head criteria are re-applied to the subgroup this.

Goal difference in all group matches;

Number of goals in all group matches;

Penalty shootout if two teams equal all of the above and they meet in the last round of this group;

Disciplinary points (yellow card = 1 point, red card as a result of 2 yellow cards = 3 points, direct red card = 3 points, yellow card followed by direct red card = 4 points);

Draw lots.

Play-off round rules:

The 2 first and second teams in each group will enter the quarterfinals and be divided into pairs as follows:

Quarterfinals 1: First place in Group A vs Second place in Group B Quarterfinals 2: First place in Group C vs Second place in Group D Quarterfinals 3: First place in Group B vs Second place in Group A Quarterfinal 4: First place in Group D vs Second place in Group C

The next 4 teams will enter the Semi-finals to choose 2 names to compete in the final and the third place match. If after 90 minutes of official play in the Play-off round, the two teams are tied, they will proceed to play extra time and if still undefeated, a penalty shootout will be held.

In the opening match, U23 Vietnam will face U23 Thailand. This will be a match that recreates the last SEA Games men’s football final.
