Proposal to redesign History in the direction of compulsory subject

Accordingly, the program is divided into two phases including basic education (grades 1 to 9) and career-oriented education (grades 10 to 12). History is a compulsory subject in the basic education stage, providing general knowledge, the core of the entire history of the world and Vietnam.

At the stage of career-oriented education (high school), History is an optional subject. At this time, the program only requires learning seven subjects and compulsory educational activities including: Literature, Mathematics, Foreign Language 1, Physical Education, National Defense and Security Education, Experiential activities – Career guidance, Interior local educational content.

History, like four other subjects, is chosen by students or not according to their interests and career orientation. History subject at this grade level is also introduced through a system of learning topics and topics, helping students develop systematic thinking, critical thinking, and skills in exploiting and using historical sources.

The change in historical study duration between the old and new curricula was also reviewed by the Committee. If students choose History, they will study an additional 210 periods during the three years of high school. If you choose to study History and study topics at the same time, the number of History lessons at the high school level will be 315. In the two cases above, the duration of History will increase by 70 and 175 periods, respectively, compared to the old program.

But when they didn’t choose History at the high school level, compared with the old program, the students learned 140 fewer lessons.

The Committee on Culture and Education assessed that the program of History has many new points, but History still needs to become a compulsory subject for three reasons.

The first, this is a particularly important subject, playing a key role in political and ideological education for the young generation, and at the same time educating patriotism, national pride, cultural and historical traditions; foster the ability to think, act and behave properly in social life.

Second, According to the Committee for Culture and Education, in terms of age psychology, high school students have more cognitive maturity and better receptivity to the history of the country and the Vietnamese revolution. This is the age that determines the formation of the worldview, the system of views on nature and society, the principles of behavior and the orientation of human values.

If students do not choose this subject, students will not have access to important and educationally meaningful knowledge for this age group.
