Teacher dies while shielding students
In a Facebook post, the cousin and aunt of Eva Mireles – the female teacher killed in the shooting said they were saddened by her passing.
“My beautiful sister. What a cruel day for all of us”, Mireles’ cousin said, expressing anger at the widespread gun violence across the United States.
Mireles’ aunt Lydia Martinez Delgado said her nephew was shot dead while trying to protect the children.
“I am very angry that these shootings continue. These children are innocent. Rifles should not be easily obtained by people. This is my hometown, a small community of less than 20,000. people. I never imagined this would happen to my loved ones.”Ms. Delgado said.

Mireles has 17 years of experience in the teaching profession. She currently teaches 4th grade students at Robb School.
Describing herself on the school’s website, Mireles said she enjoys running, hiking and cycling and feels lucky to always have a supportive family.
The May 24 shooting was the deadliest school shooting in the United States in a decade.
The 18-year-old gunman brought a rifle and handgun to Robb Elementary School before opening fire in a frenzy, killing 18 students, Mireles and Irma Garcia – another teacher at the school.
Garcia’s niece confirmed that the teacher was shot dead in the attack.
“My aunt sacrificed herself to protect the kids in her classroom. She died a hero.“, he wrote on Twitter.
In connection with the shooting, Uvalde officials said that the suspect, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was shot by the authorities. He acts alone, without outside help.
Officials also confirmed there had been two Ramos-related incidents that occurred shortly before the suspect committed the crime at Robb Elementary School on May 24.
In the first incident, the gunman shot his grandmother, injuring the victim. The suspect then caused a car crash near Robb Elementary School.
It is still unclear what caused Ramos to commit this heinous act.
