The clip of the homeroom teacher brutally beating the 9th grader caused outrage

Surveillance cameras at a middle school in Zhaotong city, Yunnan province on May 10 recorded Liu, a 9th grader, being beaten by a teacher surnamed Ma for falling asleep in class.

In the video, Ma pulls Liu out, grabs her hair, pulls Liu out of her seat before pushing her to the floor. Ma continued to kick and drag Liu out of the classroom.

“Seeing me dozing off, the teacher came and hit me. Other teachers in the school usually just force students to stand, but my homeroom teacher is very strict.” Liu said.

This male student said that after the incident, Ma continued his teaching work until May 21 when the video went viral on social media.

Liu’s brother, 16, and several parents with children attending the school only learned of the incident after watching the video. “About 10 days after my brother was beaten, neither the school nor the local education department contacted his family.“, said Liu’s brother.

Liu’s brother insists this is not the first time his brother has been beaten by a teacher. “Master Ma slaps her many times, but never as terrible as this time”, he said and worried that his brother might be psychologically affected after the incident.

Liu is preparing for the high school entrance exam. “She’s only a month away from taking the high school exam. I’m worried this incident will affect her achievements or more seriously her later life.”Liu’s brother shared.

Regarding the incident, the local education official said that teacher Ma was transferred to another position in the school and was no longer allowed to teach.

Chinese netizens think that this punishment is too light and not enough of a deterrent. “People who like to use fists like that should be kicked out of the education system”a netizen commented.
