The man stopped his heart several times due to electric shock

Gia Dinh People’s Hospital (HCMC) has used special techniques to save lives and prevent electrocution patients from having brain sequelae later on.

Accordingly, the 34-year-old NVN suffered from Shockwave at the construction site and was in a coma on May 19. He was taken to a medical facility in Phu Nhuan district, Ho Chi Minh City in a state of cardiac arrest and cyanosis. Here, the victim was massaged the heart outside the chest, shocked 3 times, injected with 6 adrenaline tubes.

After his heart started beating again, he was transferred to Gia Dinh People’s Hospital at about 13:30 on the same day. An hour later, in the Emergency Department, Mr. N. had a second cardiac arrest. The monitor showed that the patient had ventricular fibrillation – an arrhythmia that can lead to rapid death.

Doctors urgently shocked the heart with ventricular defibrillation twice and massaged the heart outside the chest until the patient had a heartbeat again.

The patient is hypothermic to 33 degrees Celsius to protect the brain.

At the Intensive Care Unit, Mr. N. was ventilated and performed the command hypothermia technique. This is a high technique that the hospital has applied since 2017 with many cases of cardiac arrest, the patient’s body temperature is reduced to 33 degrees Celsius. After 24 hours of maintenance, the patient’s body temperature is gradually raised to 0 .25 degrees Celsius per hour until reaching 37 degrees Celsius.

According to Dr. Huynh Van An, Head of the Intensive Care Unit of Poison Control, Gia Dinh People’s Hospital, usually, cardiac arrest patients after circulatory recovery may have neurological sequelae with Different levels. At that time, the patient was severely affected in daily life, causing a heavy burden on the family and society.

“The technique of hypothermia commanded at 33 degrees Celsius with comatose patients after cardiac arrest helps protect the brain and minimize the patient’s neurological sequelae,” said Dr. An.

After a few days of intensive resuscitation, the patient was awake, the doctors stopped the hypothermia machine, stopped the ventilator, and removed the endotracheal tube. Currently Mr. N. is doing well and can be discharged in a few days.

Doctors recommend that, when detecting someone who has received an electric shock, it is necessary to quickly separate the victim from the current by cutting the circuit breaker. If there is no circuit breaker, absolutely do not panic when touching the victim without disconnecting the power. At the same time, it is necessary to quickly call for help from people around, take the patient to the nearest medical facility.
