To change the world, you should do this

Bill Gates’ advice to young people who want to make the world a better place is simple: Read books.

The 10th time participating in Reddit’s “Ask Me Anything” column, when asked for advice for a young person who wants to “make a positive impact” on the world, the billionaire Microsoft co-founder said: “What ideally read a lot and maybe find a skill you enjoy that has an impact on the world.”

The world’s fourth-richest billionaire regularly publishes lists of his favorite books.

Reading is essential to uncovering new interests and hidden skills, he said. Then you can use that to mark your life.

“For some people, that means being the best at science or engineering,” Gates writes. For others, it would be to be a great diplomat, politician or nurse or doctor. Today, learning opportunities are better than ever.”

When asked what young people should do to have the most positive impact on the world, it’s not surprising that the billionaire suggested reading the book. This is one of his favorite leisure activities. Gates reads 50 books a year and often takes a large bag of books with him on vacations.

Gates wrote in the 2021 Reddit AMA: “On vacation, I spend about 3 hours a day reading a lot of books.

That same year, Gates talked about how he takes notes as he reads, sometimes in the margins of his books. This will help him better remember and understand more deeply what he is reading: “A lot of books were the key to my learning,” he wrote.

Gates also revealed, every time he starts reading a book, he always finishes. Answer the interview Time in 2017, he said, “Even if I don’t like a certain book, I won’t stop reading it” and explained that a passion for reading is integral to his success.

“You don’t really start to age until you stop learning,” Gates said. Every book teaches me something new or helps me see things in a different way. I am so lucky to have parents who encourage reading. Reading ignites a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think has helped me develop my career and work based on what I have.”

Today, the nonprofit Gates Foundation is focused on addressing global issues like poverty, climate change, and pandemic response. Gates has also recently spent some time writing his own books on these topics. Just like at the previous Reddit AMA, he asked many questions related to health and fighting global climate change.

For example, he gives advice on how the average person can deal with climate change including intentionally buying eco-friendly products, which are more expensive than conventional products. As demand for those products increases, production can scale and costs can fall.

“Green products such as electric cars, artificial meat or heat pumps for heating/cooling homes will likely be a bit more expensive when they come out. Increasing purchases of products will help lower prices, so the ‘green premium’ is reduced,” Gates wrote.
