Vietnam’s tourism ranks high despite the pandemic

TTDI 2021 is a new set of indicators of WEF, consisting of 5 groups with 17 indicators assessing the development capacity of the tourism and travel industry of 117 countries and territories around the world. This is a replacement for the TTCI (Travel and Travel Competitiveness Index) that the WEF has used for the past 15 years, with some adjustments and additions.

TTDI 2021 reflects the slow recovery of the world travel and tourism industry after the Covid-19 pandemic, with an average growth of only 0.1% compared to 2019. In 2021, only 39 out of 117 economies economy had an increase of more than 1% in TTDI index.

Japan, the US and Spain are respectively the top 3 countries in the TTDI 2021 rankings, with a score of 5.2. Singapore with a score of 5.0 ranked 9th, the highest in Southeast Asia. Some Southeast Asian countries dropped in rank, such as Thailand down 1 place (36th), the Philippines down 2 places (75th). Malaysia, India and Mongolia have the biggest drop in rankings.

Notably, the TTDI 2021 index of Vietnam’s tourism industry reached 4.1 points, the largest increase among 117 economies (+4.7%), bringing Vietnam to 52nd place, compared to 60th place. 2019. Behind Vietnam in terms of score increase are Indonesia (+3.4 %, from 44th to 32nd) and Saudi Arabia (+2.3%, from 43rd to 33rd).

The best indicators of Vietnam’s tourism industry are Competitive Price (6.0 points, 15th), Safety (5.8 points, 33rd). Vietnam is highly appreciated for the indicators in the group of tourism stimulus drivers including Natural Resources (24th), Cultural resources (25th) and Resources other than leisure/resort (such as public affairs). , study abroad, medical…) ranked 29th.

Vietnam’s tourism industry is underrated in terms of tourism service infrastructure (2.8 points, 86th), Environmental sustainability (3.7 points, 94th), Priority for tourism and travel (3.7 points, 87th place). All three indexes mentioned above have dropped in rank compared to 2019.

In addition to the technical assessments of the WEF, Vietnam’s tourism industry has recently received many positive signals for recovery and development after the Covid-19 pandemic. Notably, the “landing” of big hotel brands into Vietnam from the beginning of 2022, such as Archipelago International receiving a series of hotels in Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc, or Meliá Hotels International operating 12 more hotels across Vietnam just this year.

In addition, many hotels and resorts in Vietnam have been continuously honored recently, by prestigious travel magazines and websites. Tripadvisor has just announced the world’s top 25 hotels voted by travelers in 2022, of which Lotte Hanoi Hotel (Hanoi) is the only representative of Vietnam, ranked 13th. Travel + Magazine Leisure has just announced the list of 500 best hotels in the world in 2022, with the participation of Six Senses Con Dao (Ba Ria – Vung Tau) and 3 other representatives of Vietnam. Zannier Hotels Bai San (Phu Yen) was honored by KIWI in the top 12 best hotels in the world in 2022, with the title of Top Beach Hotel.
