Indonesian tennis players harass Vietnamese volunteers

Yeremia Rambitan, the badminton men’s doubles runner-up at the 31st SEA Games, used profanity at the Vietnamese host female volunteer.

On May 22, Yeremia and teammate Pramudya Kusumawardana lost to compatriots Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin in the final. This is the last day of badminton competition at the 31st SEA Games. Therefore, after the end of the content, the Indonesian badminton team said goodbye to the volunteers who supported them during their time in Bac Giang.

It would have been an emotional farewell if Yeremia hadn’t acted deplorably. This tennis player laughed and shouted obscenities at Vietnamese female volunteers while he was live-streaming the event via social media.

Although Yeremia explained that it was just a joke, Indonesian public opinion was still angry. Badminton Federation Indonesia (PBSI) today 26/5 must make an official announcement about the incident.

PBSI Secretary General Muhammad Fadil Imran warned Yeremia. He said the 22-year-old had apologized for his actions and promised not to do it again.

“He said it was just a joke. But everyone’s point of view is different. Not everyone realizes that it was just a joke by Yeremia. I think the internal punishment was heavy enough for him. Moreover, Yeremia’s actions have been heavily criticized by the public and he understands that,” said Fadil Imran.

Yeremia coach Aryono Miranat said he only knew about his students’ actions on the way home. “I’m sorry he acted like that. I’m sorry if Yeremia has hurt anyone,” he said.
