Thailand: A 10-year-old deer died, stunned by what was removed during abdominal dissection

A wild deer in Thailand was found dead suddenly, the cause was heartbreaking, Thai officials said.

A 10-year-old deer living in Thailand’s national park suddenly died.

According to the Daily Mail, Thailand is one of the Southeast Asian countries that consumes the largest amount of plastic waste. Thais use up to 3,000 single-use plastic bags a year, for example to pack food, take-out coffee or carry bags.

Many aquatic creatures such as turtles and dugong have died from ingesting plastic waste.

Most recently, terrestrial animals are also victims of plastic waste. Thai officials say the 10-year-old deer, which lives freely in a national park in Nan province, about 620km north of Bangkok, was found dead suddenly.

Human waste is found in deer stomachs.

The autopsy showed that “plastic bags in the deer’s stomach, directly caused death,” said Kriangsak Thanompun, protected area manager in Khun Sathan National Park.

The plastic bag found included coffee bags, instant noodles, trash bags and even underwear, according to photos released by the national park.

The incident comes just months after a young manatee tried to fight for survival after ingesting plastic waste. The animal brought Thai people to tears and died from an infection caused by plastic fragments in its stomach.

The incident that happened in August was widely shared on Thai social networks. Many people call for control of the use of plastic bags.

The deer’s death “is another tragedy,” Kriangsak said. “It shows that we have to seriously reduce the use of plastic bags, instead with more environmentally friendly items.”

Many retail stores in Thailand, including convenience store chain 7-Eleven, have pledged to stop using single-use plastic bags next year.
