This is the first destination on a 10-day visit to 8 pacific island nation of State Councilor, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi.
The visit is assessed to seek a regional agreement with most of the Pacific island nations in many areas.
Speaking at the start of a visit to the Solomon Islands, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that Beijing hopes its relationship with this island nation can be a model for other island nations in the Pacific. During this visit, the two countries will sign a security agreement, allowing China to increase its military presence there.

Following Solomon, Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit 7 other island countries including Kiribati, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste. These island nations have all signed cooperation agreements Belt and Road Initiative with China.
