“There is a risk of human-to-animal transmission, so close cooperation between health and veterinary authorities is needed to care for infected animals,” the ECDC guidance states.

The ECDC says infected owners can spread monkeypox to pets. Then, these pets will become the intermediary to infect others, according to the newspaper Jerusalem Post.

According to the European health agency, the greatest risk of infection are rodents, such as hamsters and other species of rats. Meanwhile, there is little chance of other pets like dogs and cats getting monkeypox from their owners.

Although rare, the transmission of the disease to pets and vice versa can cause monkeypox virus to spread in the wild in Europe. This is a scenario that could make the disease endemic on the continent.

“Rodent pets should be quarantined in supervised facilities, subject to animal welfare and isolation conditions, and tested for exposure prior to the end of quarantine.” ECDC guidelines stated.

The ECDC says that mammalian pets can be quarantined at home because not much is known about their ability to carry the monkeypox virus. The European health agency also emphasized that culling pets should only be a last resort when testing or isolation is not feasible.

According to the ECDC, people with monkeypox should avoid contact with other people until the pustules dry and peel off. This is the time when the sick person is no longer able to transmit the virus.

According to the newspaper The Telegraphthere are currently 344 confirmed and suspected cases of monkeypox in more than 20 countries around the world.
