Since when did you start working as a language assistant for Coach Park Hang-seo?
I started working with Coach Park Hang-seo in 2019, in charge of the national U23 men’s football team. In addition, Coach Park has another language assistant, Mr. Le Duy Khoa – in charge of the national football team. In addition to Korean, in some cases, I translate both English and French.
Before that, how was the application, application, and interview process?
In 2019, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) posted a notice to recruit a Korean language assistant for Coach Park Hang-seo, I applied. I was given a trial translation in a gym session of U23, then passed and followed the team until now.
That day, Coach Park did not directly interview, but evaluated the candidate’s ability through his assistant Kim Han Yoon for a week. After a while, Mr. Park said to give me the opportunity to work with the U23 team.
What tournaments have you accompanied with U23 Vietnam?
The first tournament I participated in was the 30th SEA Games held in the Philippines at the end of 2019. This is the tournament where U23 Vietnam won the gold medal for men’s football for the first time. After that, I continued to work with the team at the AFC U23 Championship in Thailand early 2020.
From 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic makes U23 not have the opportunity to participate in many tournaments, mainly focusing on the team and friendly matches.
By 2021, I will join U23 to attend the Asian U23 qualifier in Kyrgyzstan, the beginning of 2022 is the Dubai Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and most recently the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam.

What is the specific job of a language assistant?
In general, a language assistant must interpret and ensure smooth communication between the head coach, the coaching staff and the players. In football translation, professional understanding is a prerequisite. I think this is my passion as well as my strength.
When starting to work with Coach Park, what difficulties did you face?
Initially, I did not know many football terms and was not familiar with Mr. Park’s dialect. It took me a long time to build up my professional vocabulary and get used to his voice.
Later, I understood more about football as well as the football philosophy of the teachers, so I did not have many difficulties. However, when interpreting in press conferences requires great care, I often get nervous.

Your pressure in this 31st SEA Games, especially the final night U23 Vietnam vs U23 Thailand? How do you feel when the golden boys hold the championship?
At the 31st SEA Games, the most stressful match for me was probably the semi-final when U23 Vietnam met U23 Malaysia at Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho) – my hometown. The two teams led each other into extra time and it wasn’t until the 104th minute that we scored. The match was so intense that that night, me and many members of the team lost sleep completely.
And when U23 Vietnam won the SEA Games gold medal, my feelings were hard to describe. The whole team broke down when the final whistle blew. It was also a night that I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited and happy.

I think every member of the team contributes to the team’s victory. I myself just try my best to complete the tasks assigned by the teachers.
The final night at My Dinh Stadium, there were 40,000 fans cheering in the stands, so it was not easy to translate and transmit on the field. At that time, I had to use both body language and words to express quickly.

Perhaps the most fun is winning the SEA Games twice. The whole team was happy and moved, because it was a perfect result after many efforts of practice and preparation. The feeling of achieving goals and releasing the pressure is always great!
In the near future, will you accompany Coach Park and U23 Vietnam in any other tournaments or sports?
I have been following Vietnam U23 since 2019, focusing on the team for the past 1 year. In the near future, I plan to take some time to rest and focus on my business. But whenever Mr. Park or the team needs me, I will always be available. Because for me, it is the most honorable and sacred thing to carry on my chest the national flag and serve the Fatherland!
