Stemming from a nature that likes novelty, in April 2020, Le Van Manh happened to know the art of nail – thread painting (art from yarn – string art). From here, you spend time learning, studying from online tutorial videos and practicing drawing experiments.
With the material of nails and thread, Manh has skillfully made portrait paintings that attract viewers.
Manh said: “The creative process goes through the following steps: Image processing, algorithm research using Autocad software, nailing to picture frames and threading. For me, the most difficult step is the process of putting the sample picture into the computer to process it with an algorithm and then find the rules to wrap the thread correctly. Because, if you wrap the different thread, you have to do the painting from the beginning.”
This string art line is still quite new in Vietnam, so in the early days, Manh tried many different practice rules, accumulated experience to find creative formulas in his own way. From simple to complex portraits, large to small sizes, faces with rough to soft lines, he has gradually gotten used to the work of creating and mastering this art.
Manh shared, his works are mostly represented by circular frames, with a diameter of 40 – 80 cm.
For Manh, failing to create works is a real experience that helps him find a clear direction for the process of perfecting his next works. “Initially, I created the picture with many errors, for example, I wound the thread too thick, affecting the light-dark contrast of the picture. And each picture size is different, I have to deal with each type of only different thickness – thin. After many trials, I found the principle of alignment, found a way to connect the thread wrapped around each nail to sketch out the finished portraits,” he explained.
Manh’s works often take the idea of sketching portraits or close-ups of the client’s face. According to him, the personal emotions in each eye are like a catalyst for Manh to create unique, vivid and soulful paintings. When customers order paintings on request, Manh has a problem that many people send sample photos that are quite blurry or mixed with the surrounding context.

It usually takes 2-3 hours to post-process the photos through editing software to make them sharper and neater. After that, he used specialized software to analyze the light and dark array, the interaction… Next, he used an algorithm to encode the pixels into the appropriate numbers.
From the decoded sequence of numbers, the creator skillfully wound the thread to match each position of the nail. According to Manh, the average number of nails for a painting is from 200 to 400 pieces, the number of times of threading through the nail on the picture is about 3,000 – 5,000 times and it takes 6 – 12 hours to complete a nail – thread portrait.
Manh shared, the painting materials were also carefully selected by him. He experimented on many different types of thread to choose the right thread. Nails used to make paintings are copper nails, ensuring no rust, helping paintings to be preserved for a long time.

By combining digitization technology and hand-crafted art, Manh has done more than 130 completed paintings so far. The highlight of portrait painting from nails – it’s just that the more nails, the more beautiful the details of the painting but requires more work. “Every step must be done carefully and skillfully. Depending on the amount of thread going through each area, it will create a dark and light color for the painting, thereby showing more expressive shades and facial contours…”, he added.

In his free time, Manh often participates in exchange activities, sharing the parameters of the paintings he has studied for enthusiasts of nail art.
According to Manh, those who intend to pursue this subject need passion, perseverance and eagerness to learn. “With the first drawing, I don’t remember clearly how I messed up the thread that was difficult to untie or break, but I didn’t know how to handle it. The feeling at that time was hard to forget. From my first work, now, I have found my own creative style with many paintings that are loved by many people. In the future, I’m learning how to make nail paintings with new techniques of multi-color coordination, with different types of picture frames: circle, heart, square… to create a more novel work… “, Manh expressed.
