Science warns Earth will become a chaotic planet with devastating consequences, is it due to human destruction?

Not only are humans warming the Earth, we’re making the climate chaotic, a new study says.

A new scientific paper published on April 21 tries to paint a full picture of the potential impacts of human activity on the climate. Sadly, that picture is not very bright, especially if we do nothing to mitigate climate change and fossil fuel use.

Climate change is creating extreme phenomena. Pictured is Hurricane Michael – the first Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle.

The study was conducted by a team of scientists at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Porto, Portugal.

Orfeu Bertolami – a member of the research team – said: “The signs of climate change are very clear (drought, heat wave, extreme events…). If the Earth system enters the zone of behavioral chaos, we will lose all hope of fixing the problem“.

The Earth regularly experiences major changes in climate, shifting back and forth between stable equilibria. These shifts are often caused by external factors such as a change in the planet’s orbit or a sharp increase in volcanic activity.

However, previous studies show that we are entering a new phase of transition caused by human impacts, especially by activities that generate carbon emissions. During this period, weather patterns will fluctuate rapidly and unpredictably, making it extremely difficult to predict.

Accordingly, scientists suggest that human activity in the next few decades will play a big role in determining the type of future climate we face. Controlling emissions will lead to a different outcome than we continue to emit at the current rate.

Using a number of computational models, the study shows that emissions and human populations will peak at some point in the future. In the best-case scenario, Earth’s climate will stabilize at the new higher temperature. Although this is pretty bad for humans as the weather gets hotter, sea level rises… at least it’s predictable and stable.

Climate change is leading to extreme forms of weather such as heat waves and heat waves, with air temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in many regions.

But in the worst case scenario, Earth’s climate will fall into a state of true chaos, that is, completely unpredictable. When it does, the crops will change wildly over a decade or even a year time frame.

Some years there will be extreme weather events, while others will be very peaceful. Temperatures will also fluctuate from very cold to very hot from year to year.

Ultimately, controlling and directing Earth’s climate to equilibrium would be impossible, threatening the survival of all living species on the planet, not just humanity. The consequences for the biosphere will directly affect human life such as crop failure, famine, natural disasters… and we cannot reverse that process if we go too far.
