According to initial information, on the afternoon of May 25, after drinking alcohol, Tan went to the place where his biological mother was working as a hired hand at a milling factory owned by Mr. Nguyen Tan Thanh in Phu Kiet commune.

Holding a 2-liter fuel tank in his hand, Tan threw it on Mr. Thanh and lit it on fire. Mr. Thanh suffered severe burns and had to be treated at the Tien Giang Central General Hospital.
After that, Mr. Thanh was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC) for treatment with 3rd degree burns. By the morning of May 27, Mr. Thanh had died.
