British Prime Minister suggested Ukraine join a new alliance to counterbalance the EU?

The above information is published by the newspaper Corriere della Sera of Italy. According to this newspaper, there are growing rifts between Kiev and the EU over the European Union’s response to Russia’s military campaign. Some officials Ukraine did not hesitate to criticize EU member states for their reluctant military support to Kiev, as well as the bloc’s failure to impose an embargo on Russian energy imports.

Sheet Corriere della Sera, citing sources familiar with the matter, said that in the past month, London has been actively campaigning for the establishment of a “European Commonwealth”. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is said to be trying to forge a coalition to counterbalance the EU, which includes Britain, Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and possibly Turkey. The new alliance will welcome countries that support economic freedom and are determined to repel “the military threat from Russia”. The alliance’s activities will cover many different aspects from political to economic and military.

Sources revealed that Mr Johnson first mentioned the idea to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his surprise visit to Kiev on April 9. Since then, Britain is said to have constantly persuaded Ukraine. However, the Ukrainian government has yet to refuse or accept the offer.

London has not yet commented on this information.

The Italian newspaper reported that Mr Zelensky was awaiting the outcome of an EU summit on June 23, in which member states are expected to decide on whether to accept Ukraine’s candidacy.

In addition, the source also said that rumors about London’s plan to lure Kiev away from the EU were made to put more pressure on the leaders of the member states before the meeting next month.

Despite opposing Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, EU member states have shown varying degrees of support for Kiev. Poland and the Baltic states are not the wealthiest members of the EU, but have actively contributed to aid to Ukraine. While great powers like France and Germany only contributed modestly.

Commenting on the information revealed by the Italian press, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on May 27 that Russian officials were not clear whether Mr. Johnson really intended to form a new coalition. If this does happen, Moscow will see this as an attempt by London to stir up disagreements that could undermine the EU’s standing.
