Djokovic and Alcaraz advance to Roland Garros . fourth round

ParisNovak Djokovic increased his winning streak to eight matches when he defeated Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, while Carlos Alcaraz beat Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

Djokovic have not lost a set since the beginning of the tournament, winning eight consecutive matches from the Rome Masters. Against the 195th ATP opponent, the number one seed played comfortably. He earned 30 winners and only made 18 self-defeating mistakes. Djokovic entered the fourth round of Roland Garros for the 16th time after 18 appearances.

The ability to serve well helped Djokovic only face a break-point the whole match and saved successfully. The Serbian player’s first serve win rate is up to 85%, and the second ball is 72%. Playing on clay but Djokovic also has 9 ace points, twice as many as his opponent, and scored 13 points after 17 times on the net. He did not spend much physical strength when the match was only 1 hour 45 minutes long, 15 minutes longer than Nole’s usual training session at Grand Slams.

Djokovic will meet Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round. The Argentine player lost all six times against Djokovic, most recently at the ATP Finals 2020. In that losing streak, Schwartzman won only three sets. He pulled Djokovic into the fifth set in the third round of Roland Garros 2017.

Like Djokovic, the sixth seed Carlos Alcaraz just three sets to go on. He successfully avenged Sebastian Korda after losing to his American opponent at the Monte Carlo Masters last month. 24 winner points helped Alcaraz take advantage of four break-points after more than two hours of competition.

Alcaraz played more firmly than the five-set match in the previous round. He chose the right time to hit the decisive shot, limiting self-defeating errors. Alcaraz only made 26 errors, compared to Korda’s 40. The Spaniard kept the game thanks to a 76% first serve scoring rate, and also 56% of his opponent’s second serve points.

“I always like to hit my hands on every ball, no matter what the score is and how difficult the game is,” Alcaraz shared after the game. “That’s my style and I hope the audience will like it. Of course, I have a strategy against each opponent and know when to take risks. The last thing I want is to enjoy every moment on the pitch.”

Alcaraz will meet 21st seed Karen Khachanov in the fourth round. If you win, you are more likely to clash Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. The German third seed this round beat Brandon Nakashima 7-6(2), 6-3, 7-6(5).
