Korean veterans under investigation for going to Ukraine to fight in the war

“I haven’t completely left the battlefield yet. I went back to the country to get treatment for my injury. I want to go back because the fighting isn’t over yet, there’s still work to be done,” Rhee said at the airport.

The South Korean veteran suffered a cruciate ligament injury in both legs, but was still able to walk. About 10 policemen are said to have been waiting at the airport and asked Rhee to quarantine for a week as a precaution against COVID-19. After that, Rhee would be summoned for questioning.

“I will cooperate with the investigation,” Rhee said.

Previously, Rhee posted a number of photos and videos about the process of participating in the war in Ukraine to social networks. South Korea’s foreign ministry filed a complaint against Rhee in mid-March for allegedly violating immigration laws, shortly after he arrived in Ukraine.

Since February, South Korea has banned its citizens from traveling to Ukraine for safety reasons. According to the regulations, those who defy the ban could face up to a year in prison or a fine of 10 million won.

The veteran revealed that Ukraine had offered to grant citizenship, even land, but Rhee refused. “I don’t think it’s right to naturalize to avoid fines or trial,” Rhee said.
