Stampede at the church, at least 31 people died

NigeriaAt least 31 people were killed in a stampede as hundreds jostled to receive donations at a church in the southern state of Rivers.

According to Rivers state police spokeswoman Grace Iringe-Koko, hundreds of people flocked to a local church on the morning of May 28 to receive charity food. Crowds jostled at the gate causing a stampede that left at least 31 people dead.

According to local media, the tragedy happened in the southern city of Port Harcourt Nigeria. Witnesses said most of the victims were transported to a nearby military hospital.

Some initial information said that among the victims were pregnant women and children. The church where the stampede took place organized a “Free Shopping” program, giving gifts and food to celebrate its 4th anniversary.

Witnesses said people had lined up more than two hours before the event started.

About an hour before gift distribution, another group entered the church through the small gate to participate in sports activities, but inadvertently created conditions for the crowd waiting for charity to jostle to get in early.

“Everyone gathered very early. Some people lost their patience and started pushing, leading to stampedes. Police at the scene are monitoring the situation. The incident is under investigation,” Iring-Koko said. know.
