Ukraine adviser threatens NATO members

RT on May 26 reported speaking in an online discussion at the Kiev Security Forum, an adviser to the Minister of Energy UkraineMs. Lana Zerkal, criticized the policy of the Hungarian government – which is blocking the sixth round of European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia.

“Ukraine has the leverage to exert heavy pressure on Hungary through the Druzhba oil pipeline. Something could happen to Hungary’s separate infrastructure. Hungary is using a “special Russian military operation in the country”. Ukraine” as a tool to achieve its own goals and thinks that now they can ask for anything from the EU,” Zerkal warned.

According to the adviser, the government and the President of Ukraine must make a decision on political issues, decide whether Kiev really wants to have a dialogue with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

“However, in order to calm the situation, the official position of the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy on this matter remains unchanged. Ukraine is a reliable carrier of energy firms to Europe,” she stressed.

Budapest has not yet commented on Ms. Zerkal’s threat.

In a letter to European Council President Charles Michel, published by the Financial Times, Prime Minister Orban is said to have told the EU that a bloc-wide ban on Russian oil would cause serious problems. important to his country’s economy. So “urgent investments” from Brussels are needed.

Hungary is almost entirely dependent on Russia for gas imports and more than half of its oil imports. The country receives 65% of its oil imports through the Druzhba pipeline. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto previously said that Budapest would support a maritime shipping ban on Russia but not on deliveries via the pipeline.

Despite the lack of consensus within the EU, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on May 23 that the bloc’s 27 member states “will achieve a breakthrough within days” on the ban on Russia.

Ukraine has repeatedly called on European countries to stop buying energy from Russia, claiming that doing so would fund Moscow’s military campaign.

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused European leaders of “economic suicide” by trying to give up Russian energy.
