Ukraine may withdraw its troops from the east as Russian forces advance

Job Ukraine Withdrawal of troops will bring Russia closer to the goal of complete control of the two provinces of Lugansk and Donest in the eastern Donbass region.

Lugansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai said that after trapping Ukrainian forces for several days, the Russians had entered Sievierodonetsk – the largest city in the Donbass region that Ukraine still holds.

“The Russians will not be able to win Lugansk in the coming days as analysts predict. We will have enough strength and resources to defend ourselves. However, in order not to be surrounded, we will have to withdraw,” Gaidai wrote on Telegram.

Pro-Russian separatists say they now have control of Lyman, a rail transport hub west of Sievierodonetsk. Ukraine says Russia has captured most of Lyman but its forces are blocking Russia from entering Sloviansk, a city about a half-hour drive southwest.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was protecting their land “as far as current resources allow”.

The Ukrainian military claims that it repelled eight attacks on Donesk and Lugansk on May 27, destroying tanks and armored vehicles.

“If the enemy thought that Lyman and Sievierodonetsk would belong to them, they were wrong. Donbass will be Ukrainian,” Zelensky said in a video speech posted late at night.

The British Ministry of Defense says that Russian troops are advancing after breaking through Ukrainian defenses in the city of Popasna in the south of Sievierodonetsk. Ukraine now controls many villages in the northwest of Popasna.
