Ukraine’s top peace negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak said today that any agreements with Russia cannot be trusted because they have no value.
“Any agreement with Russia are not worth a dime,” said Podolyak, an adviser to the President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, writes on the messaging app Telegram. “Is it possible to negotiate with a country that only knows propaganda and lies?”
Russia and Ukraine blame each other after peace talks stalled since late March. The Kremlin said earlier this month that Ukraine was not willing to continue peace talks, while officials in Kiev accused Moscow of being the one causing the talks to fall short.
President Zelensky said earlier this week that President Vladimir Putin was the only Russian official he was willing to meet to discuss ending the conflict.
Russia launched a special military operation on February 24 to “demilitarize and de-fascist Ukraine”. After more than three months, Russian forces are said to have been planning to move deeper into the Donbass region, in eastern Ukraine, slowly but surely, since withdrawing from the central and northern regions of the country.
The British Ministry of Defense on May 23 said that Russian forces are stepping up their attacks as they seek to encircle Severodonetsk, Lyschansk and Rubizhne to control the entire Lugansk province, east of Ukraine. The agency assessed that Ukraine’s military continues to be strongly defensive, but that Russian forces “have made some small strides” in the region.
