Ukraine separatists threaten death penalty for foreign mercenaries

The separatist judiciary in Donetsk announced that three mercenaries from Britain and Morocco could be tried and face the death penalty.

Viktor Gavrilov, a spokesman for the judicial service of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), announced on May 27 that they had completed their investigation of a group of foreign mercenaries in the area. Ukraine accused of “participating in the preparation and conduct of hostile acts against the DPR”.

“The case documents have been transferred to the court of the DPR. In wartime conditions, this behavior could lead to the death penalty for the defendants,” Mr. Gavrilov said at a press conference.

The DPR prosecutor’s office said on the same day that two citizens Brother Shaun Pinner and Andrew Hill, along with Moroccan citizen Ibrahim Saadoun, are charged with mercenary behavior and organized crime.

The UK and Morocco have not yet commented on this information.

Shaun Pinner and another mercenary Aiden Aslin, believed to be British citizens, called on the Prime Minister Boris Johnson facilitated their exchange with Victor Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian opposition leader who is being held by the Ukrainian authorities.

Andrew Hill posted a video in early May saying that after arriving in Ukraine, he realized it was “hell on earth”, and criticized many foreign mercenaries as “bad guys and brutal”. “I understand I did everything wrong and hope for leniency from the DPR authorities,” Hill said in the video.

After Russia launched a special military operation on February 24 to “demilitarize and de-fascist Ukraine”, citizens of many countries went to the Eastern European country to join the international volunteer force set up by Kiev. . Many countries do not allow citizens to go to Ukraine to fight, warning them they could be prosecuted after returning home.
