36% of households in Brazil lack food

This number has just been announced by the Brazilian Institute of Economic Research. For the first time, the risk of food insecurity in Brazil – the largest food producer in Latin America and the world’s top – is higher than the world average, since the regional food security data released on Tuesday. This area was collected in 2006.

This report states that food insecurity for the poorest 20% of people in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic has increased from 53% in 2019 to 75% in 2021, roughly the same rate in Brazil. Zimbabwe, the country that records the highest level of food insecurity in the world at 80%.

In addition, the gender gap in food insecurity in Brazil in 2021 is six times higher than the global average.
