Expensive fruit helps farmers make billions of money per crop

Currently, the retail price of durian in the Ho Chi Minh City market has shown signs of cooling down because the main season is leaning towards the end of the season. Ranging from 80,000 – 90,000 VND/kg at supermarkets and reduced to 70,000 VND/kg (whole fruit) on weekends or promotions.

At the end of last month, at some traditional markets, the price of whole durian, depending on the variety, ranged from 100,000-150,000 VND/kg, the separated durian was from 360,000-500,000 VND/kg. Prices at supermarkets and convenience stores are slightly higher.

Bau Don commune (Go Dau district, Tay Ninh province) has 3,000 hectares of land for rice production, after which plant varieties have been converted. Up to now, 1,300 ha of fruit trees have been converted from rice production land. Of which, more than 2/3 of the area is devoted to growing durian trees. The most popular durian variety in this commune is Ri6, followed by Monthong.

In particular, Ri6 is a durian variety that is favored by the market because of its dry, thick, sweet and fatty pulp, which does not stick to the hand when held. On the other hand, it has a high percentage of flat seeds, up to 40%. The fruit is ripe, the spines are open, the peel is cracked very easily in separating the segments. Durian Ri6 has a weight ranging from 3 – 6kg. Usually, the price of Ri6 is higher than Monthong.

During this year’s durian season, the orchards specializing in replanting this fruit give quite positive results. Ms. An has 1ha of Ri6 durian being harvested. From the beginning of April until now, the woman over 60 years old has sold more than 7 tons of fruit, the price at the garden fluctuates from 60,000-70,000 VND/kg; equivalent to about 500 million VND. It is expected to increase when the durian crop has not yet finished the harvest.

Planting durian diligently earns 1-1.5 billion VND/crop

Currently, the provinces, mainly in the South, have durian cultivation all the time, so the supply output to the market is slower than in 2021. According to the management of Bau Don Fruit Cooperative, every day the members of the cooperative put 15-17 tons of fruit on the market.

According to observations, the price of mulberry sold at the beginning of the season is relatively high, can reach 60,000-70,000 VND/kg, in the middle of the season it drops to 40,000-50,000 VND/kg. However, the current average harvest capacity of the locality is maintained at about 18 – 20 tons/ha. This helps durian farmers in Bau Don commune earn an income of about 800-900 million VND/ha on their land.

Similarly, in the West, gardeners also confirmed that the selling price has decreased compared to last year but still profitable. Specifically, in Tien Giang province, the price of this fruit sold in the garden ranges from 40,000 to 50,000 VND/kg (depending on the type), a decrease of more than 10,000 VND/kg compared to the previous year. Gardeners still make a profit of nearly 10,000 VND/kg at this price.

Mr. Tu (Vinh Long province) told a reporter: “The price of durian has decreased due to many reasons, of which this year the epidemic has improved, goods circulate easily. Last year, it was difficult to deliver goods, so the goods were less. , the price is inflated This year, our garden is expected to be able to earn billions. profit, maybe not much, but being profitable is fun.”

Sharing the same opinion, Uncle Nam, a durian farmer in Tien Giang, said unfavorable natural factors also affected the price of durian this year. Specifically, some provinces in the West suffered from drought and saltwater intrusion, causing a decrease in fishing output. This makes the supply unbalanced. “Ri6 on the spot, I was bought by traders at the garden for about 60,000 VND/kg. This is a rather high price compared to the family’s expectations. With this price, the family can profit from 1-1.5 billion VND/kg. because this year’s output is good.”

However, Uncle Nam also expressed concern because at the end of the crop the price will drop. “Every year, the price can drop by half. With the income from the investment so far, the family has temporarily made a profit. At the end of the crop, if the price at the garden is not too low, we can make a little profit,” he laughed. and talk.
