Nepal plane carrying 22 people goes missing

A Nepalese private airliner plane went missing today with 22 people on board, government and airline officials said.

The small plane went missing while flying from the tourist town of Pokhara, about 200km northwest of Kathmandu, to Jomsom, about 80km away.

An airline official said the plane was carrying four Indians, two Germans, 13 Nepalese and three crew members.

The plane lost contact at 9:55 a.m. local time, the leader of Tara Air said.

According to air traffic control at Jomsom airport, they received unconfirmed reports of loud noises in Ghasa, a locality in Jomsom.

A helicopter has been dispatched to the area where the last contact with the plane was recorded.

Nepal – the country with the highest mountain peak in the world – has recorded many domestic plane crashes because of its volatile weather conditions and rugged mountainous terrain.
