Nepal plane carrying 22 people mysteriously disappeared

A plane carrying 22 people operated by a private airline in Nepal lost contact with air traffic control shortly after takeoff.

Reuters news agency, citing Nepalese officials, said the missing plane was a DHC-6 Twin Otter owned by Tara Air, which departed at 9:55 a.m. local time. today (May 29) from the tourist town of Pokhara to the town of Jomsom about 80 km to the northwest.

Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority said a helicopter was sent to search for the location of the lost plane, but had to turn back because of bad weather.

According to Sudarshan Bartaula – a spokesman for Tara Air, the DHC-6 lost contact with 22 people, including 19 passengers and 3 crew members. Nepalese officials confirmed that there were 16 Nepalese nationals and 6 foreigners on the plane, including 4 Indian nationals and 2 German nationals.

Police official Prem Kumar Dani said a land search and rescue team had been sent to the area near the top of Dhaulagiri, the closest place to locate the plane before it disappeared. This is the 7th highest mountain in the world, with an altitude of about 8,167m.

Nepal, which is home to eight of the world’s 14 highest peaks, including Mount Everest, has a history of frequent plane crashes due to weather changes and many airports are located in difficult locations for take-offs and landings.

The most serious recent air crash in Nepal took place in March 2018, when a Bombardier Q400 of US-Bangla Airlines crashed while landing at Tribhuvan airport in Kathmandu, killing 51 people. and 20 people were injured.
