The project co-developed by China National Salt Industry Group Co., Ltd., China Huaneng Group and Tsinghua University marks a big step forward in the research and application of new energy storage technology of China. China.
The storage unit uses electrical energy to compress air into an underground salt cave, then releases the air to drive a turbine, which can generate electricity when needed.
Energy storage capacity in each cycle reaches 300,000 kWh, equal to the daily electricity consumption of about 60,000 residents.

The salt cave was formed after mining the underground salt layer at a depth of about 1,000 m above the ground, creating a warehouse with an area equivalent to 105 swimming pools.
“Compressed air technology can support the construction of a new type of power system with new energy, helping the country limit the highest carbon emission threshold by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060,” Zhou Ting, Deputy director of Changzhou branch of China Grid Corporation, said.
