Overturned boat carrying dozens of people in Indonesia
Indonesian rescue teams are searching for 26 people missing after a boat carrying 43 people capsized off the island of Sulawesi.
Local media reported that the motorboat left Paotere port in Makassar, capital of South Sulawesi province last night (May 27) and was reported missing the next day because it did not reach its destination.
The rescued passengers were taken by tugboat to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan and Jeneponto in South Sulawesi, the head of the Djunaidi search and rescue agency said today (May 28).
Indonesian authorities attributed the accident to a lack of fuel and bad weather. “We have confirmed that the boat sank in the search area. We have received information that 17 people have been found and rescued by passing ships.”
The Indonesian meteorological agency earlier warned of waves up to 2.5m high in the Makassar Strait area and it could be dangerous.
