Stampede at a Nigerian church, dozens of people were killed
At least 31 people were killed in a stampede at a church in the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria today (May 28).
“Hundreds of people who came to receive food at the church on Saturday morning lost their patience and jostled their way into the gate, causing a stampede. Police are on the scene monitoring the situation, while an investigation is underway,” local police spokesman Grace Iringe-Koko told Al Jazeera news agency.
Al Jazeera cited some preliminary information that among the victims were pregnant women and children. The church where the stampede took place organized a “Free Shopping” program, giving gifts and food to celebrate its 4th anniversary.
According to witnesses at the scene, most of the victims were transported to a nearby military hospital.
