Suspect in murder of three family members arrested

On the evening of May 29, the Criminal Division of the Criminal Police Department (C02, Ministry of Public Security) said that it had discovered and controlled Doan Minh Hai in District 12, Ho Chi Minh City. He appeared to be quite calm, complying with all requests. Currently, the suspect has been handed over to the Phu Yen Provincial Police for further investigation.

In the morning of the same day, Mrs. Tran Thi Hien, 85 years old, living in Hoa Hiep Trung ward, Dong Hoa town, called the door but did not see her husband and son, Nguyen Cu, 60 years old, and their grandchildren answered. When neighbors ran to break down the door, they found the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Cu and their 28-year-old daughter Duong, lying in a pool of blood. Particularly, the 3-year-old girl, Duong’s daughter, is missing. The crime scene showed signs of struggle, many items in the house were disturbed.

Mr. Hien said that last night, when he came home late from the funeral, he found the house closed, turned off the lights, and couldn’t call forever, thinking that everyone was away, so he slept on the porch. Until this morning, the old woman continued to call the door but could not.

Colonel Vo Duy Tuan, Deputy Director of Phu Yen Provincial Police, said Duong’s daughter was later discovered at her grandparents’ house in the same neighborhood – about 500 meters away. Hai is the suspect in the crime but is not present in the locality.

The area where the murder occurred was sparsely populated, hundreds of meters apart. Neighbors said they did not hear unusual noises from Mr. Cu’s house last night. In recent years, Ms. Duong has divorced her husband, Doan Minh Hai, and brought her daughter to live with her parents. Recently, Hai has come many times to find, argue, and raise children.

Mr. Cu’s family was in financial difficulty, and his two sons had to work as hired laborers to earn a living. He worked as a lottery ticket salesman, but recently had a serious illness and had to stay at home, while his wife went to collect ticks.
